Traditionally, there are four dishes served in the Italian family:

 Breakfast (colazione)

Lunch (pranzo)

Afternoon snack (merenda)

Dinner (cena)

The menu of lunch or dinner contains a first course/primo (pasta or soup), a second course/secondo (meat or fish with a side dish of vegetables), fruit/frutta, possibly a sweet dessert/dolce and coffee/caffè for the adults.
