Grammar

  • When you must or have to do something, you'll be told deve (or devi if you're on first-name terms) followed by a verb ending in -are, -ere or -ire.

 

  • When you want to ask if you must do something, you use Devo...?

 

  • To ask if you're allowed to do something, you say Posso...? which is also followed by a verb ending in -are, -ere or -ire.

 

  • Similarly, if you want to give someone permission to do something, you say Puņ..., or Puoi... if you're on first-name terms.

 

                   Devo spedire un pacco       I have to send a parcel.

                   Posso inviare denaro?        Can I send money?
